Manhattan is the most populated of New York City's Five Boroughs as well as the oldest part of the city. The Island was first settled in 1626 after it was purchased by the United Providences from the Native Americans for $1,051. The Dutch would control the island until 1664 when England conquered the island during a war with the Dutch and decided to trade the island of Run for Manhattan. Under the British rule, Manhattan would grow to become a very large city and it served as the de facto capital of the United States from 1783-1790 when the capital was moved to Washington D.C. Through the years it would become known as the financial and culture capital of the world as more and more immigrants arrived in the city from all around the world. Manhattan is home to several notable landmarks such as Central Park, the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and Times Square. In 2020 Manhattan's population was listed as 1.63 million people.
