Brooklyn is one of the Five Boroughs of New York City. It is located at the southwestern edge of Long Island. The borough was named after Breukelen in the Netherlands and was founded by Dutch settlers in 1634. It began as a village on the outskirts of Manhattan that was under English rule during the 17th and 18 century. In 1896, Brooklyn was incorporated into New York City and became the second largest of the boroughs. Brooklyn has become known for its brownstone buildings and ethnic enclaves (Italians, Jewish, Polish, African-Americans, and many more). In 2020, Brooklyn's population was listed as 2,648,403.
